Vermont: 1596.7 – 1746.5
Vermont! Once upon a time, Benton McKay stood atop the Stratton Mtn fire tower and envisioned a long distance footpath through the wilderness. The Long Trail through VT resulted (which M&M completed in 2013). The LT begat the Appalachian Trail, and the trails share 105 miles until the AT hooks a right after Killington and heads into New Hampshire while the LT heads north to Canada.
NJ, NY, CT and MA: 1293.4-1596.7
Woah: its been a long time. Contrary to popular belief, we *are* still alive and hiking! At the end of our last post; we were about to leave rocky Pennsylvania (July 5th!) focused on Getting Home. Continue Reading →
Harpers Ferry, WV to Delaware Water Gap, PA: 1023.4-1293.4
As I (clover/su) write this, it is a cool, rainy 4th of July day in Delaware Water Gap, PA. I’m in the tent, Mya asleep beside me, as the raindrops fall. I get to puppy sit and write while M&M/Mike is off doing laundry (& bowling!) with Laces, Forever, Click, Blade, Gelati, CheeseBeard and Pie — no one wanted to go out and get wet today…we all need a break. Waynesboro, VA to Harpers Ferry, WV: 861.7-1023.4
C’mon, sing along with us: “well, we have walked a thousand miles, and we will walk a thousand more….” (& then we’ll only have 189.2 left to get to Katahdin…)
Troutville, VA to Waynesboro, VA: 739.3-861.7
One of the most profound motifs of this journey has been the kindness of strangers.

Damascus, VA to Pearisburg, VA: 470.2-634.9

Thank you!
Mya, Su and I just wanted to take the time to thank all of our friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and the like for all of the love and support! From food, snacks and dog treats to socks and thoughtful comments. It makes this journey a little easier knowing that everyone is hiking with us. Thanks so much for all the support!
Love 8 Paws
Hiker hunger!
Once upon a time, Mike was vegan. In a kingdom far, far away, Su ate lots of organic veggies. Sugar was an uncommon occurrence. Portions were considered and sometimes limited. Ingredient lists were consulted to minimize preservative intake.
That was then….
Hot Springs, NC to Erwin, TN: 274.4-342.9
It’s been almost a week since we left Hot Springs, NC. A bunch of hikers are still there, wooed by the fun to be had in Town.
Franklin, NC to Hot Springs, NC: 109.8-274.4
As we write this, a beautiful sunny 70 degree day is beginning in Hot Springs, NC.

Scooby snacks for 8 paws!
Everyone’s been asking what they can send us and what we need to make our hike better. You’re all so great! So here’s a list to make it easier. Please keep in mind that Su has to carry everything you send, so please know that we never carry more than 3-5 days worth of stuff.
Amicalola Falls to Hiawassee, GA: mile 0-69.6
Hey all, sorry for the delay; it turns out AT&T doesn’t want Georgia mountain folk to communicate. It’s been tough getting enough signal to post. But alas we’re back in civilization (Hiawassee, GA) for a night of relaxing, eating and showering!
On the road…
Six states in one long car ride — to NC to visit Mike’s sister Theresa. Six more hours to GA tomorrow…
And so it begins….
“Quit your job, rent the house, sell your car, grab your girl and your dog, come with us, we’re going to Maine, life is never going to be the same.”

Anyone hungry?
Su and I spent the weekend getting our food ready for the first leg of our hike; Amicalola Falls to Neels gap (3-4 days). As well as getting our resupply boxes and all Mya’s resupply food ready to give to mom so she can ship ’em as needed.

What’s in our packs?
Here’s almost everything we’re planning to carry on our AT thru hike attempt. You can have a look at our detailed gear lists by following the links at the top of the page.
Foggy Day on Tecumseh
Icy roads and slow going led to a sudden change of plans this fine, foggy, Sunday morning. The original plan was to drive 4.5 hours and hike the 10.6 mile loop around Cabot Mountain, bagging Mike and Mya’s #47. Continue Reading →
Winter stroll to Waumbek
After an exciting thanksgiving weekend with Su’s Family, we opted to take a nice, peaceful, relaxing little stroll up Mt. Starr King and over to Mt. Waumbek for Mike & Mya’s NH 4000 footer # 46 and Su’s #21!
M&M’s #45 Mt. Carrigain
With Su off saving lives in Honduras, Mya and I decided we’d run up Carrigain really quickly. Quick was right, as we had to be back to pick Su up at the airport that night.
Ahhhh Gear, Sweet Gear!
So what will the 8 Paws be carrying with them on their adventure you may wonder. Well we’ve been working hard to get all of our gear ready for the trail. Luckily most of it is stuff we already have and use. Some is new, some yet to be purchased, and we are pleased with our choices and looking forward to our final base weight (everything we’re carrying minus food and water) being under 12 lbs each. For a complete detailed list of our gear see the Gear Lists pages. Enjoy!
Mya Does The Prezi
Columbus Day weekend Mya and I decided to head up to the Whites for a Presidential Traverse. It was a beautiful, slightly chilly weekend, hardly any clouds aside from the morning fog, which was so thick that it could easily be mistaken for a calm lake.
The Pemi Loop
The Pemi loop is a 32 mile loop in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. The loop summits a total of twelve 4000 foot peaks, if you count the side trails we took to bag a few outliers.
